“We're trying to raise community awareness and get excitement about, how the community could run The Granville and what would go into it”

Granville’s community: management that works for all

Our Why
South Kilburn is undergoing huge transformations as a key part of Brent’s regeneration. In 2016, Granville Community Kitchen’s (GCK) home was earmarked for demolition but was saved, following a successful campaign. Unfortunately, the Granville is currently undergoing redevelopment to ‘regenerate’ the site with limited rooms available for the community to rent. GCK now operates from three different locations whilst the Granville is closed to the public due to construction works. Running community meals twice a week, and managing a Good Food Box which provides good quality, affordable fruit and veg for the South Kilburn community.

Our Idea
Although the proposed regeneration of the building is going ahead, the
management of the site was never agreed upon. Previously, the site has been
managed by the South Kilburn Trust as per an agreement with Brent Council. We are now in the process of developing the case for community management. This includes embarking on a period of research to connect with all the Granville’s organisation and community stakeholders, to develop collective management. We believe that the only way to keep Granville alive is for the community to take charge of its management.

We hope that community management will open up generative conversations
around the need for greater community participation across the whole of the
regeneration masterplan aside from the Granville. We are seeing the Granville as a
demonstrator for what can be achieved across the whole neighbourhood.
